    NEW FRIENDS…

Out of all the things that could have worried me before coming to England the thing I was worried about the most was finding new friends. I am usually quite good in making friends but I always relied on school or my hobbies to be a place to meet them. I did not have such a thing here for the first few weeks and I am really not the kind of person who goes out to clubs at night so how was I supposed to meet people? As soon as I set foot on English ground my concerns were allayed by a nice girl named Celina who came up to…

    ARRIVED AT LAST…

My first two weeks in England have also been the worst two weeks in England. It started off quite nice but then a big argument with my host family followed and lead to them kicking me out of the house. I was lucky enough to already know Johanna, another au pair working in Ascot, who took me in for the night. We bought chocolate cake, ice cream and wine and watched “Der Schuh des Manitou” (a German comedy). I don’t think I’ve ever had such a good break-up! 😉 The next day my new host-mum Rachel picked me up from Johanna. We had only met the day before and she…

    MY LITTLE CITY GUIDE

As I’m trying to get around a little while I’m here I thought I could do a little tour guide of all the city’s I’ve been to. I‘m going to include some general information I get from my good old friend Google but also tips and tricks from my visits of the respective city or town. Because I might visit some city’s more than one time I’ll maybe add some details later on. Enjoy!

ROUGH TIMES AND RAYS OF HOPE…

You have maybe realised that I haven’t blogged anything for about a week. Unfortunately my time-abroad-fairytale turned out to be a little time-abroad-nightmare! Things like that happen. I started to feel very unwell in my family for reasons I don’t want to specify any further. Let’s just say it wasn’t only them and it wasn’t only me but more everything together that just didn’t work out. I spend nights crying myself to sleep, missing my family and my friends at home, feeling lost and lonely but didn’t quite knew what I couldn’t cope with. I don’t think I’ve ever used Skype as much as I did during that time, calling…

    OXFORD…

Unlike I initially hoped I had to do my first day-trip alone without Celina since she became ill in a matter of two days, I’ll spare you the details here. So I went to the bus stop alone and arrived one hour later at the station in Oxford. I forgot to look up some interesting sights beforehand and so I just wandered around in the streets a little bit, looking at the beautiful old houses and the new shopping centres. One especially caught my attention – the Westgate shopping centre right next to my bus stop. It is a huge openly created complex with a lot of nice shops. I…

    MY FIRST DAY

I woke up this morning in my new room which will be mine for the next year. The fresh air came through the window facing the garden and I pulled my blanket a little tighter. Apart from the cold I must have caught from my mum I felt pretty good and was looking forward to my first day in my new home. Firstly my host-father and I went to the doctors to register me. I had to fill out some forms and do some tests such as measuring my blood pressure or my height and then I was officially registered as a patient. If my cold doesn’t get better soon…

    SAYING GOODBYE…

This is the day, the day I was waiting for so long. It came out of a sudden although I was counting down to it. What a strange feeling to see Germany disappear under you from the aeroplane window and to know that you won’t be back for some time. My new home will be Reading a city in Berkshire about as large as Kassel a little bit bigger. I’ve never been there but I did some research on the internet. All I found out was that they have a lion statue but that’s about it for the sights. Actually not bad considering I’m not there for sightseeing. So right…

    IT’S BEGINNING…

During the last weeks I must have packed and unpacked my suitcases a million times – that’s what it feels like at least. It’s not easy thinking about everything you could need during one year. Of course there’s always the possibility of buying stuff once I’m there but let’s be honest who wants to spend the money when you know that you have the exact same thing at home? Shirts, trousers, jackets, jumpers and shoes it sounds easy but if you have 10 shirts you enjoy wearing which one do you take with you? So many decisions… Also there’s not just clothes but memories I want to carry with me.…
